Oh, these old thangs?

Just some older work I had done for some enemy concepts for a game. None of these were used ingame so I decided I may as well put them up, even though they are old by now. But still fun, right?

another new character

The Savage Thloth's of the Dense Jungles of the Northern Wreckage are solitary, territorial, and ravenously carnivorous. They have been seen feasting on their catch often before it has even passed on, and are said to enjoy gulping the fluid of eyes that can still stare at them.

This was a quick study, and a lesson in capturing form without heavily relying on line, something that was very prevalent in the last character design I did (see the shark-man 2 posts down).

After I started working on the character, I realized it reminded me very much of the Ralph McQuarrie Star Wars concepts from the original trilogy way back in the 1520's. I havn't actually looked at his art in many moons, though I do recall trying to copy a lot of his drawings with a standard HB pencil and looseleaf back in middle school. I think one of the original concepts for Chewbacca might have been sloth like, though any similarities are coincidental.

I hope you guys like it, and I'd love to hear any critiques you guys have on how I can continue to improve my self to (at least) an entry level position in the industry!

Oh and I included a smaller version of the line art because I know I always like seeing other artists framework, and not to toot my own horn but I do like the way the lines themselves turned out for such a quick sketch.

happy halloween!

It's a self portrait of me as the Heaaaddlessss Hoooorsemaaann! OOOH BOOGIDY BOOGIDY BOO

new character

Well, I've been overwhelmingly inspired by the works of Doug Wildey and Alex Toth recently, masters that they were. This started with the intention to do something in the style of Marc Bagley originally, but I guess my subconcious decided to take it old school.

The shark man is a lean, deep swamp dweller, who hunts with a pack and is incredibly territorial.

Today, my goal was to create something with deep crisp lines that showcase form more than style, which was an old, bad habit of mine. I also wanted to demonstrate my ability to capture various styles of art with these last few posts of mine, and my willingness to learn and grow as a conceptual artist.

The sea theme to the weapons and armour, while light, was still a challenge to express as cleanly as possible. I had to google image a few images of sea shells to make sure I was getting them close to reality.

I have the full intention of finishing the final renderings of his gear.

What do you guys think?

edit - posted the finished character, as well as a quick color swap line up

some more fun

Because Gaudiness is next to Godliness

more color studies

Just a quick 1 hour sketch...I'm hoping to pick up the pace on these, because I need to strengthen my inner color theory and my internal conceptualizing demons.

Passion Fruit

So a few quick paintings..not something I do, work quick with color and multiple layers, greyscaling, highlighting, recoloring. Just playing around and seeing where it takes me I sappose.
Now this is something I'd love to have some hands on mentoring with, the whole digital quick concept painting world..

Hahaha, take that obnoxious titles.

I decided to have a bit of fun on this little detour from pressing duties.
Trying to capture a manga feel for the femme was a little tricky but I think it's all good.

For the colors, I used a fun, complementary scheme that seemed to jump out at me, and threw the colors together and used the Healing Brush(J) in photoshop to give them a sloppy but purposeful water color feel. After that, I simply applied a texture set to overlay of some rust, then slightly oversaturated the entire image.

Fun Fun :D

unused concepts

The Post above and below are animate gifs of an attack and a walk cycle.

These are unused concepts from the Telefilm/IMA project I am working on. I'm only allowed to show concepts and unused material.

The Skeletortoise lost some color when being exported as a gif unfortunately. Also, some clipping occured, but again, this issues weren't a problem in game. The character would have been very tiny when viewed on screen, though bigger then the rest as he was going to be a boss.

All work is copywritten and trademarked 2009.

warmup sketches

Hey viewers! Been busy lately, but these are a just warm up sketches. I get started on these before focusing on the work I'm getting paid for, which unfortunately I'm not allowed to post yet, but you'll be seeing it when I can.

But where as these arn't focused or driven sketches, very few get pushed passed this level of completion.

surprise!!

Dylan...you gotta stop shouting surprise randomly!

demon maquette

Did this as a sort of show and tell for the Animation Camp I teach.

Oh, did I mention this to you guys? It's a one week course, but the program runs for 7 weeks so thats 7 individual groups. It's been my first chance to teach or interact with tweens and man is that age group hyper.

It's all the red bull I think.

But its been a blast. Still a few more weeks to go, and I've been refining my methods as we go. There was no set cirriculum. This was a maquette I built out of clay for them, with a wire frame skeleton. I baked it and painted it for fun.

Basically I was trying to bring the level of clay animation done up a notch. These kids love clay, love to mold it and make monsters and the like, but I thought "Hey, we can spice this up."

Anyway, It's left this way because I want them to be able to see the underlying skeleton of the creature.

self portrait

Self portrait, done by looking into a mirror, not from a photograph. Also some quick studies from life of Jade. The studies of the plains of her face was very poor, and I've decided to focus on portraiture a bit more now.

booze hound

My sordid, carnal love affair with beer knows no bounds.

I need to get a job and put an end to all this. But which side will win? Will a be a homeless destitute beggin for change so I can push my cart all the way to the Liqorium and buy myself a 10 cent bottle of hooch?

Or will I be champion of all that is right?

Wait that's not what I was going for....

I'm hungover :( Maybe drawing will get the beer cooties outta my system.

Or maybe not.

Hawkgirl

So, Moved to Moncton. I've been reading a lot of graphic novels lately.

Powergirl.
Superman/Batman/Supergirl (aka the return of supergirl)
Wolverine: Enemy of the state(Mark Millar and JRJ make such a good fuckin team)
and lets see.... Oh, Kick-Ass, another MM and JRJ team up.

And theres so much more but I can't think of them at all.

Besides all that, Justin Lee, a fantastic (and very tall and skinny) friend of mine is movin to town, so good hang outs and sketchjamdoodle-pow wows are ahead!

I redesigned Hawkgirl to be more of a....skank I guess.

Check it!

Oh and yah it's VERY high res.

This is from pretty early this year I think. Why would I erase my name into a drawing with
a big fat vinyl eraser? WHO KNOWS!

I've been told she looks like a DJ in this picture. Unintentional!

Still raining!

The best part about drawing, is when you just...have fun. Make up a random character, and slap some shitty photoshop colors on it to help bring it to life.

You can do whatever you want. It's friggen fantastic.

Anyway, here's some character I just made up. Let's call her...Azuless, the seeress/prophet!

Run for the hills!

AWFUL! SEXY! BRINE!

some real-deal drawings of folks!

Well, just a bunch-o-drawings of some cool cats.
Theres a few Willie Ashworth's in there, some Brian Sharp's, some Ron Doucet's and Rob Anderson's, there's some Scott Caple's, a Rambo, A Geordie Millar, A Ryan Cole, and a guy at a Tim Hortons.
A lot of those guys are hot shit, in about 4 senses of the word. Some are almost 5.
The whole lot of 'em came to our school as guest speakers...except the guy from Tim Hortons, and the Ryan Cole (a visiting graduate) and the Geordie Millar(life drawing teacher). It was pretty fun to dip into the brew with 'em at the pub.
Lots of good things to say.

R.I.P Michael Turner.

So, just found out he passed away. Here's the link. http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=16988

I'm actually heartbroken.

In other news...my stuff is locked in the school and could possibly be thrown out. How was I to know saturday doesn't count as part of the 'week to get your stuff'.

Roar!

So long guys!

Well, pretty much the whole crew is gone now, or leaving today as far as I know.
I honestly can't believe those three years went by so fast. Things like this always creep up on us don't they? And they never get any easier.

I'm actually pretty choked up right now, just thinking about all the good times I've had. Who cares about the bad anymore.

Man, we are all graduates now, and we're all heading off to do our own things. I want to wish good luck to the whole 2008 class. All of you meant so much to me, and I hope the best for each and every one of you, except Andrew! You're just a big jerk! No just kidding man, you get a bit of luck too!

I don't really know what else to say except that I'll really miss each and every one of you, and I'll really cherish these last few years we had together before we all had to become official grownups.

This is to Bunni, Laura, Leelynn, Thomas, Ben, Andrew, Tanya, Pat, Holly, Sachairi, Sonya, Tim, Curtis(and Abaddon), and Josee (with a é in there somewhere).

And our instructors, Heather, Geordie, Rick, Tara, Terry(sorry I never did that last after effects project), Brenda, Jason, Kevin, Ed, and even Brian and Clyde for everything they've helped the class out with.

You guys made sure that everything went as smooth as possible for us, and were always really leniant and forgiving even when you swore you wouldn't be. I may not be the best artist on the planet, but I'm a hell of a lot farther up the ladder then I should be, and it's thanks to you guys!

Love you everybody!

Characters I designed from the group up for a small company that wanted some teen superheroes designed. They liked them but ended up settling on someone else for the project. I guess that means I can put them up.
What do you guys think? I actually had a lot of fun doing these because most of my pictures are just random characters doing nothing, but these guys and gals have names and personalities and hang nails and one of them probably farts more then he should.

hipeace

- Dunnnooo. Gosh darn bored. Burn and dodge for the win! Getting up a few hours earlier then you girlfriend every morning basically leads to me opening up photoshop and drawing random pictures. Rush jobs are so fun, you know when you only spend 20 minutes or so on a picture. Heck yes!
- Graduated from school yesterday. Officially over. Still have to pick up my crap from school though.

Man...who wants to hire me?

Cause I'm pumped!

ad for..

Decided I'd try to do another ad for JJ of JJ's Boardshops here in town.

I did a reaaaaaaally crappy logo for him once with a mouse and a gimpy twisted version of photoshop that did everything backwards years ago.

So I did this today. About 15 minutes of work I'd say.

I basically got bored this morning and e-mailed it to him as a freebie cause I'm tight like that.

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Here in Newfoundland.

Completely, hopelessly bored. But it's great to spend the most time I've spent with my parents since probably before I came to college.

Lots of great vegetarian food we've made, even if they turned their noses up at the idea.

Do I even have any art to post? Probably but you ain't gettin it..cause I don't have a scanner.
